26 May: International Women’s Day for Peace and Security

Friday 20 May 2005
A Women for Peace Vigil will be staged at the Anglican Cathedral in Suva on Thursday 26 May, 2005, from 12 pm to 2pm.

This vigil will serve to commemorate:

♀ The International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament which is commemorated globally on May 24th

♀ UNESCO’s Decade for a Culture of Peace

“The world of humanity has two wings one is women and the other men. Not until both wings are equally developed can the bird fly. Should one wing remain weak, flight is impossible. Not until the world of women becomes equal with the world of men in the acquisition of virtues and perfections, can success and prosperity be attained as they ought to be…” (Bahaii saying)

The Women for Peace Vigil will also serve to provide an important space where women can once again come together as wives, mothers and daughters of the Fiji Islands, celebrating our diversities, as we collectively seek to find equitable and peaceful solutions to the many challenges facing us as women and as a nation.

"We envisage this process will help us to strengthen our role as peace-builders in our home and community, and also as decision makers for peace, reconciliation and unity in our Fiji Islands"
